Overview

“FUD” is a marketing label: crypter sellers promise that a file passed through their product does not match any signature at the time of scanning. This is temporary; signatures are added as the file spreads. MITRE ATT&CK

Evading signature-based detection does not mean evading behavior-based detection; what the file does when it runs is still visible. MITRE ATT&CK

02

How it works

  1. 1

    File encrypted

The payload is passed through a crypter; a separate shell is produced for each customer. MITRE ATT&CK

  2. 2

    Scanned

The seller checks the file on scanning services that do not share samples and shows the result to the customer.

  3. 3

    Used quickly

Once the file starts being detected, a new shell is produced.

Real-world examples

Vidar: string obfuscation

Vidar profile

Vidar added string obfuscation based on a virtual machine and a custom stream cipher to make detection and analysis harder. Zscaler

04

How to detect it

  • Look at what the process does instead of the file signature: reading browser databases, deleting itself, unexpected network uploads. MITRE ATT&CK
05

What to do

  • Restrict new, unsigned files from running with application allowlists and behavior-blocking rules. MITRE ATT&CK
