Overview

NIST defines a zero-day attack as one that uses a vulnerability the vendor does not yet know about or for which no patch has been released. NIST CSRC

The vulnerability remains dangerous after a patch is released: exploit code spreads quickly for systems that are not updated. CISA lists actively exploited vulnerabilities in a separate catalog. CISA

02

How it works

  1. 1

    Vulnerability found

The attacker finds it themselves or buys it. MITRE ATT&CK

  2. 2

    Code written

Exploit code that uses the vulnerability is prepared. MITRE ATT&CK

  3. 3

    Used

It is used in targeted attacks, then in broader campaigns. MITRE ATT&CK

Real-world examples

CVE-2024-21412: SmartScreen bypass

Meduza Stealer profile

Fortinet reported that CVE-2024-21412, which bypasses the Windows SmartScreen warning, was used by Water Hydra, Lumma Stealer and Meduza Stealer, and that the campaign targeted North America, Spain and Thailand. Fortinet

04

How to detect it

  • An up-to-date, patched application starting an unexpected child process or crashing. MITRE ATT&CK
05

What to do

  • Apply patches quickly; prioritize those in CISA’s catalog of actively exploited vulnerabilities. CISA
  • If there is no patch, isolate the application and tighten behavior-blocking rules. MITRE ATT&CK
