Overview

After login, sites recognize the user by a session cookie. If this cookie is stolen, the attacker can continue the same session without being asked for a password or multi-factor authentication. MITRE ATT&CK

Because infostealers read browsers’ cookie databases, session hijacking is a common route to account takeover today. MITRE ATT&CK

02

How it works

  1. 1

    Cookie stolen

The infostealer copies the browser’s cookie database. MITRE ATT&CK

  2. 2

    Imported into a browser

The attacker loads the cookie into their own browser or an antidetect profile. MITRE ATT&CK

  3. 3

    Session continues

As long as the session is valid, the site takes the attacker for the user.

Real-world examples

Stealerium: gaming service sessions

Stealerium profile

Stealerium-based malware also collects session tokens of services such as Steam, Minecraft, Battle.net and Uplay. Proofpoint

04

How to detect it

  • The same session cookie being used from a different country or network within a short time. MITRE ATT&CK
05

What to do

  • On infection, revoke all sessions and refresh tokens along with the password. MITRE ATT&CK
  • Use device-bound sessions and short session lifetimes. MITRE ATT&CK
